The night began with the mayoral candidates from Chapel Hill and Carrboro introducing themselves and their platforms. The speed dating portion consisted of five large group circles that voters gathered in. In groups of three to four, the candidates moved from circle to circle, talking with participants about their platforms and answering questions. After every seven minutes, the candidates would switch to the next group, and the process would begin again. Lisa Kaylie, vice president of DWOC, said this event was unlike other candidate forums because it allowed candidates and voters to have meaningful, intimate conversations.
Candidates initially dominated the conversation, trying to market themselves over their competition.

Bourdieu, The Rules of Art xix. To understand the dynamics of literary festivals is to engage with the social and cultural co-ordinates of a particular manifestation of what Bourdieu calls the literary field, and to observe its production of authors and readers as well as texts. The reflections on festival culture assembled in this essay take their cue, not so much from Bourdieu’s ambitious project of cultural mapping as from his insistence that the analysis of the social conditions of the production and reception of a work of art, far from reducing it or destroying it, in fact intensifies the literary experience’ The Rules of Art xix.
The nature and intensity of the literary experience in the festival setting, which are the main concerns of this essay, displace and modify but do not destroy the pleasure of the text, which proves remarkably resilient whether enhanced by other pleasures or subjected to critical scrutiny. In early January , the Saturday Age published an article on the latest addition to the ever more crowded calendar of literary events, literary speed dating Hardy. Organised by the State Library of Victoria, the event ran according to a set formula: participants brought a book of their choice to a function room in the library where they partnered up for five minutes each with a member of the opposite sex to discuss their offerings same-sex couples also catered for.
After a session of serial literary intercourse, participants posted a secret ballot as to which partner they really fancied, which they didn’t like, etc. The article doesn’t say, but one assumes there was then some mixing and matching going on and if you were in luck, you would end up happy ever after with a perfectly compatible bookworm. An event like this takes seriously the saying that you are what you read–and your choice of, say, Murray Bail’s Eucalyptus or Linda Jaivin’s Eat Me should send clear signals to potential partners about your preferred modes of romantic entanglement.
But that assumes that participants have actually read the books brought by their potential partners, or at least the book they themselves bring along. As the author of the article discovered, however, not everyone had done their homework. One young man had picked up a book from the local bookseller on the way because he thought it ‘looked OK’–reading it seemed an optional extra, and the ‘literary’ discussion was a mere pretext for getting close enough to check out his partner’s cleavage. One may wonder why this man decided to turn up to a literary event at all, as opposed to any other form of organised dating service.
